AMD's Graphics Battle

AMD has been locked in a fierce rivalry with graphics chip specialist Nvidia ( NVDA - news - people ) since it agreed to acquire graphics chip company ATI in 2006. While AMD struggled at first in the graphics chip market, it hit back hard last year when it launched a new generation of graphics chips, gobbling up business from rival Nvidia.

Now AMD hopes to remain competitive in the graphics business with a new family of graphics cards, the ATI Radeon HD 5800 series. The launch of the graphics cards last month was timed to take advantage of a new generation of computers that can run Windows 7, which goes on sale Oct. 22.
